Confused about recycling?
I have just read an article by Natwest Bank which shows that there is an eye watering amount of credit cards in circulation. Whilst this is perhaps to be expected in todays’ cashless society, the problem begins when the cards expire. Natwest’s research reveals that there are 65 million unused plastic cards are gathering dust in UK homes. That’s just the UK – and just the unused cards! Since 2017, credit, store and gift cards have created over 380 tonnes of plastic waste. The problem is the way that the cards are disposed of; over 6 million people assume that...
World Wetlands Day 2nd February
I recently came across an article about the world’s wetlands, and as the 2nd February has been proclaimed World Wetlands Day, this seems like an appropriate time to write about the problem of the loss of wetlands. Wetlands are as important as rain forests in terms of their biodiversity and contribution to the Earth’s survival, but are often overlooked when we talk about saving the planet. By definition, wetlands are ecosystems where water is the major factor controlling the plant and animal life in an environment. Wetlands can encompass both freshwater and coastal areas, whether natural or man-made sites. They...
Mental Well-Being
Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions — disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behaviour. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviours. Many people have mental health concerns sometimes, but a concern can turn into a mental illness when ongoing signs and symptoms cause frequent stress and affect your ability to function. A mental illness can begin to take hold and make you feel miserable, which causes problems in your everyday life, such as at school or work or in your relationships. This...
Earthshot programme winners
You may have seen this last week, the results of the 2022 Earthshot programme. It was televised on Sunday evening and shows the inspirational people that are thinking of ways to help the planet and those of us who live on it. This was the second year the awards have been given, a project launched by Prince William and Sir David Attenborough to improve the state of the planet by 2030. I chose this initiative last year as a subject for a blog and make no apologies for doing so again. I think that it’s brilliant to be able to...
COP 27 – A brief look at what happened
As you are probably aware, The COP 27 meeting has just finished, and as usual, there has been some controversy. The purpose of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was to build on the outcomes of COP26, held in Glasgow last year. The COP27 website has a wealth of information available; articles about greenwashing, net zero emissions, community projects and many more give a mixture of hope and despair. The biggest news was the decision to establish a loss and damage fund, by almost 200 countries, to support nations that have...
