Is living in the past a good thing?
I often get told I live in the past, usually when it comes to music. I reckon the 60s and 70s were the best decades for music, but then they were my formative years. I’m sure others prefer a different decade for similar reasons. Of course, they’re wrong, because the 70s were the best. And when I complain about the price of a pint of beer or a coffee, again I get told to wake up and stop dreaming of 30p a pint or 50p for a gallon of fuel. But this is a bit different, it’s nostalgia in a...
Helping others to help yourself
When we’re asked to do something, we sometimes fall into the trap of thinking “what’s in it for me?” This may be a natural reaction and it does have its’ place, depending on what the request is, but in life generally maybe we should be asking “why not?” Instead of “what can you do for me, what can I do for you?” There are several quotes I’ve found: - "What goes around comes around" "No-one ever became poor by giving" "Helping others is how we help ourselves" "Helping one person may not change the whole world, but it could change...
The Beauty of Borneo
I’ve recently watched the Earth’s Tropical Islands programme about Borneo on the BBC. What an astonishing place Borneo is! Back in November I blogged about Biodiversity, and having watched the documentary about Borneo, the island personifies the definition of Biodiversity. The programme talks about the animals, plants, people and the weather that make Borneo the unique place that it is. Borneo is about twice the size of Britain and is home to around 60,000 species of plants and animals, the greatest number anywhere in the world. Both plants and animals have adapted to live in their surroundings and have evolved...
Be Realistic
New Year’s Resolutions – I’m not preaching that you have to have them, just trying to help you achieve them if you decide to make them. New Year’s Resolutions are OK in theory, but in reality are rarely stuck to. This is because often we set ourselves unrealistic targets. Be realistic If the only targets we set are the end goal, they may seem unachievable; the key is to set a lower target which in turn will lead to the end goal. For instance, if the end goal is to lose say 3 stone in weight, set the target at...
Keeping fit
Don’t worry, I’m not about to preach that you should start running marathons or swimming the channel! Keeping fit, in my opinion, is very much age and ability related. If you’re not doing anything at all then start gently and work up to something a bit more challenging. If you always take the car, try walking instead; it will mean allowing a bit of extra time to get there but the walk will do you good, you’re saving fuel and therefore money, so it’s a win, win, win. Admittedly you can’t walk to the supermarket and do a week’s shopping...
